ISSUE

Stryker Medical was looking to reduce warehouse and shipping cost on  a particular style of hospital bed. The beds were stored horizontally in the warehouse prior to shipping.  The previous shipping method was to attach a wooden footer and header to the bed so that it could be raised vertically and stand on the attached footer. The beds were then moved by crane into the trailer and secured for shipment.  This method required significant prep time and effort to attach the expensive wooden pieces to the bed. These wooden frames were prone to damage and breakage and had to be replaced on a regular basis. In addition the method used to raise the bed upright put strain on some of the beds major components. The time spent to load the trailers using this method was slow and cumbersome. In addition due to the limitations in securing the beds into the trailer, less than full trailer loads were bring shipped.

SOLUTION

Pinto Products Inc. was was contracted to provide a more cost effective method of shipping that particular style of bed.  Working with the manufacturer and the logistics company, Pinto Products Inc. developed a wheeled dolly system that eliminated the issues of the previous method.  The Pinto Products' method offered numerous cost saving advantages over the previous method. Starting with how the bed would be raised to a verticle position, specially designed brackets that incorporated it's own pivot point were attached to the bed.  When raised, the bed pivoted on the bracket eliminating the strain put on the bed itself.  The bed was then lowered on to and secured to the dolly.  It could then be easily moved to a storage area, then rolled onto the truck for shipping.  Two beds could be shipped per dolly and could be prepped in a fraction of the time it took the previous method to prep one bed.

  • Saved 15-20 minutes prep time on each unit
  • Returns due to damage in shipping virtually eliminated
  • Used 75% less storage space-(4 beds stored vertically in the same space as 1 bed horizontally)
  • Time to load trailers reduced by 75%
  • Number of units per load increased by 33%

As can be seen, significant time and money was saved by utilizing the Pinto Products Inc. method. This shipping method has been used for the past two years generating cost savings that far exceeded the initial cost of the system. With an estimated life of 10 years or more,the Pinto Products Inc. method will continue to generate revenue for the customer for years to come.  Pinto Products Inc. has since been contracted to develop shipping systems for other pieces of hospital equipment

The beds were then moved by crane into the trailer and secured for shipment.  This shipping method caused a number of problems including damage to the beds, wasted warehouse space and partial truckload shipments.  There had to be a better, more economical way to store and ship these beds, and Pinto Products Inc. created it!
